UN Special Envoy for Haiti, President Clinton, planned a conference for January 5, prior to the earthquake, at his New York City office to moderate a discussion on how the international community can support Haiti and reinvigorate the Haitian economy. The Prime Minister of Haiti, H.E. Mr. Jean-Max Bellerive, was scheduled to attend. Then the earthquake struck. Though the Prime Minister could not attend, President Clinton proceeded with the meeting, albeit with an urgent new agenda.

As Headwater Senior Advisor and Chairman General Russel L. Honoré headed to CNN Atlanta headquarters to provide expert commentary on the disaster, CEO Bruce A. Bernstein met with President Clinton, along with key private sector business leaders and public sector experts to discuss the extent of the known losses at the time, immediate needs in Haiti and continued response and redevelopment needs for the country. Clean, safe water will be a critical part of both Haiti’s recovery, and disaster prevention in the future.
